Your Guide to Creating the Perfect Cup of Coffee -
Preparing and savoring your ideal cup of coffee takes little more than slowing down and abiding by a few simple steps. As your trusted coffee connoisseurs, we feel it’s our responsibility to provide this essential information.
Step 1: Preparation
Coffee is perishable, so freshness is key. Buy coffee weekly in small amounts from a roaster who can guarantee the coffee is only days, not months old. Store in an airtight container in a dry, dark, cool place (50-70°F) and not in the refrigerator or freezer.
Step 2: The Grind
The outer structure of the coffee bean acts as a shield protecting the flavor inside. Only when you’re ready to brew should you set this flavor free. The correct grind depends on the length of time water will be in contact with the grounds. Drip coffee requires a coarser grind since the brew time is approximately 5 minutes. Use a Burr grinder if available.
Step 3: Brewing
Use only fresh, cold, filtered water; there are plenty of inexpensive pitcher-style filters out there. Whether your method is manual or electric, be sure the grounds get saturated evenly with optimally hot water (195-205°F) for 4-6 minutes. The recommended ratio is 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water, but this can be adjusted slightly to suit your taste.
Step 4: Fresh and Clean
Serve your coffee right away. If it must sit, put it in a thermal carafe. Never allow your coffee to sit on a burner as this can seriously deteriorate the flavor. Keep your storage container, brewer, and grinder clean, and you’ll always be ready for the next brew.
